If you are one of the estimated 63 million patients that suffer from neuropathic pain, you know that it can have a significant impact on your quality of life. You may have been injured, had an illness such as diabetes, cancer or shingles, or your pain could be the result of the toxic effects of chemotherapy used to treat patients with cancer or HIV.
The current classes of drugs used to treat patients with neuropathic pain include anticonvulsants, antidepressants and opioids. Anticonvulsants represent the largest share of the neuropathic pain market, with gabapentin leading the class.
XenoPort has created a new drug candidate, XP13512, for the management of neuropathic pain. The parent drug of XP13512 is gabapentin, an FDA approved drug for the treatment of epilepsy and post-herpetic neuralgia.
We believe that XP13512 could be a highly effective treatment for certain types of neuropathic pain. It is designed for optimal absorption of gabapentin and to overcome problems of variability with absorption that impact gabapentin's treatment effect.
Because XP13512 is a Transported Prodrug of gabapentin, which has been used to treat over 12 million people with various neurological disorders, the design of our clinical trials of XP13512 benefits from a comprehensive understanding of the safety and efficacy of gabapentin. While we look forward to proving that XP13512 is safe and effective in our clinical program, our knowledge of gabapentin gives us greater confidence in the ultimate safety and efficacy of XP13512.
